The American Values Club crossword (formerly the Onion A.V. Club xword) is roughly 6.5 years of age, and has for its entire history been written by a talented group of constructors including but hardly limited to Byron Walden, Matt Jones, Matt Gaffney, Tyler Hinman, Deb Amlen, Brendan Emmett Quigley, and Francis Heaney.
Basically what happened was that we were the official weekly crossword of the Onion for six years, and then suddenly the paper dropped the feature, and we decided to become independent. We ran a Kickstarter campaign where we made almost $30,000 in subscriptions in just over a month, which gave us a nice basis for continuing. We now have thousands of subscribers, a group we heartily invite you to join! In brief, we had no idea whether people would be willing to pay $15 a year to get a weekly crossword, so we made sure it was extra awesome, and added bonus puzzles and contests and app support and other perks, and so far it seems to be working. Today the American Values Club is the leading puzzle for young degenerates anywhere, and we couldn't be prouder of what we've accomplished.
No outside submissions are accepted, though I would love to check out your AVCX-esque work if you're looking for feedback. Email me.
